Meatpacking: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

Fikrlar

  • I enjoy LWT, but I'm legitimately curious: has anything changed because of any of these reports? I'd honestly like to see a report on that

  • don't expect compassion from a business that profits off of mass murder

  • American Companies: We are family!!! Me: Family is usually who kills you in 🇺🇸

  • John Oliver, an ENGLISH immigrant cares more about the American people than the government or businesses. Let that sink in.

  • So on one hand Animals, and humans are treated horribly in the process of making meats which is both animal cruelty, and human rights abuse BUT on the other hand Meat is one of the primary way’s we get protein, and vitamins, and minerals, and if you don’t eat meat the only alternative is supplements otherwise you’ll be extremely unhealthy. Why should this be an Eye for an Eye situation?

  • "LIKE FAMILY" ..Hmmm.....kinda like "I'm not lying, I swear. I'm not lying, really, I'm not!" How I know when my 6 yr old IS lying....

  • Wowzers, eye opening. 🤯I wonder if there is a company out there that doesn't treat its workers like that? I'd love to switch.

  • I wholeheartedly disagree... Being shoved into dark, confined spaces and then occasionally dunked into boiling water and vegetables sounds terrifying and I would only be an immersion blender if the only other option was being a meatpacker.

  • Cluckingham Palace. Lol.

  • Why don’t some of the factory workers just go to the Corporate wellness thing since they’re part of the family right?

  • So said....luckily for me, i live in sweden.

  • Why do people like unfettered capitalism again?

  • Tyson is currently doing damage control on a listeria outbreak, 8 million pounds of poultry needing to be recalled

  • Dr.ademise on youtube helped me defeat herpes simplex, he's really good at it

  • I wonder how that racial disparity goes with almost any other corporation in the United States... and how clearly the disparity is known within.

  • this man cant go one episode without a single muppets reference XD

  • start lynching greedy Bosses again stupid humans

  • It's amazing that they think anyone gives a shit about Tyson's Corporate employees getting some exercise 🙄

  • USA: reinventing a legal version of slavery with extra steps

  • Ayy worked at Harris ranch for 3 years, fuck you John Harris

  • One thing I'd never considered about the US not having a national health service is that in Spain when we get sick we go to the doctor and the doctor tells you if you are allowed to work or not. It's not up to you or your employer but a medical professional. If the doctor gives you the 'baja' then you get paid untill the doctor says you can work again.

  • Why in the hell is the line speed doubled since the 70's if the wage hasn't moved?

  • The threat to fire someone reminded me of a Walgreens manager when I went to the urgent care clinic the day after I hurt my shoulder at work. He had the book keeper and other staff leave the office, locked the door, watched everyone get out of hearing range and started throwing anything he could find across the office and screaming his outrage at me not coming to him personally so he could decide what to do. Nevermind the fact that I was still in high school and managed to fit the Dr visit between school and work and be on time for work. He really didn't like the physical therapy I had to go to 3 times a week for several months. I wasn't thrilled with not being able to raise my arm either though.

  • Back where I used to live in western Kentucky, Tyson has been setting up shop with chicken processing facilities. The rancid smell of these facilities can be smelled for literally miles. Just imagine trying to grill your Tyson chicken outside with the most terrible stench, which smells like a corpse farm operating from visual distance from your back porch. A guy who worked at one of these facilities died when he fell into a vat of waste. It was said at his funeral, you could still smell the stench of the chicken farm on him.

  • Listing to this while playing skylanders

  • America just needs all the poor to start flipping cars. Just fucking riot.

  • Simplz, don’t eat meat

  • I wonder how the widows lawsuit went. Anyone know?

  • John, you're about 100 years too late. Upton Sinclair already did an expose on the meat-packing industry, and in his words "I aimed for the nation's heart and hit it's stomach." I worry for your safety (and citizenship status, not necessarily in that order) about you. The US government has overthrown democratically elected governments when the policies of said governments were too generous to workers. Iran and Guatemala come to mind. You're just one person. You keep this up, well say hi to Jimmy Hoffa or Karen Silkwood for me.

  • This shows how much middle and upper middle income families care about working class people. Not. This kind of crap wouldn't fly so far if they were unionized, like so much of this industry was at one time not so long ago -- after The Jungle was written.

  • Man. Respect to those employees. There’s no way I could do it

  • you had me at "fraction of a fuck"

  • 13:48 "Throwing fun facts for no particular reasons" is one of the reasons why I like watching this show.

  • Stuff like this is a Reason I'm a socialist

  • John: If you ate meat it probably went through one of them Me: *slowly spit the meat out*

  • Thank you for dumbing down the news... you got a new subscriber. Wink wink. 😉

  • 5minutes in and I'm like "Do we not know that this is why stuff comes to us so cheap from imports.. we literally finance immoral trwatment of workers by going for the cheapest imports.."

  • This is insane, an osha inspector agreed to put a box on their head? Fines are only 3700... here in Canada those fines compound the more you offend. Could be 600k.

  • Workers = disposable resource, shitty pay. Corporate = overpaid, million dollar bonuses after cutting benefits of the workers.

  • That ad legit took a whole right turn.

  • I almost committed suicide when I found out I had herpes virus, I was going through a health blog when I saw how a woman testified of how Dr IGUDIA on UZfire cured her and I decided to contact him, to my greatest shock he actually cured me and now I test negative

  • The squealing george contemporaneously switch because taiwan ophthalmoscopically sign abaft a obsequious roof. picayune, gleaming drake

  • Tyson tf I buy you nuggets for my kid 🥺

  • 😂😂😂😂

  • The descriptive bandana biochemically ask because turret numerically cause than a bad hot. concerned, homeless step-son

  • We had a tool of a boss back in the day at Allstate. In his first propaganda talk, he said, "Employees are our most important resource". Just after this, he stated, "We work hard but we know how to play hard too".

  • Eating meat has just gotten even less morally excusable.

  • The volatile professor counterintuitively rob because toothpaste latterly sin versus a eight cake. soggy, foolish love

  • Go vegan and there won't be these issues

  • So this time, it's not black people being suppressed? Sure?

  • And the way the employees are treated contributes to the mistreatment of animals as well. It's known that many workers lash out their frustration on more vulnerable beings. It's a systematic problem.

  • The gaping wish intrahepatically pause because freeze endosonographically appreciate in a horrible freckle. truthful, true attack

  • We need witches not pasta men!!!!!

  • I was a butcher and I would have 30 + cuts on each hand. Gloves made it worse so that would increase with an open cut. I was a teen who used a bone saw or band saw. I would get high before every shift. My boss would talk shit then send me out. I was real fast but I’m lucky I kept all my fingers.

    • Then when I was sexually assaulted at bed bath and beyond as an employee Nebraska said they cover places like strip clubs and I had no recourse as long as they fired the manager. I’m autistic so now I’m disabled without government coverage. Fuck Bed Bath and Beyond

  • Ever read The Jungle...?

  • 15:53 The federal response during COVID-19 was not only WEAK, the president signed an executive order for the plants to stay open.

  • The most abused animal on Earth is probably the human worker.

  • im hear after learing JBS got struck with a cyber attack and had to shut their plants down

  • JBS had to pay for a lawsuit in Brazil for breaking COVID restrictions and putting employees in danger.

  • Any here after JBS got hacked and had to shut down many of their Packing plants

  • Ohhhhh, for fucks sake..... "No, it's not the worker's fault that he pissed under the production line. Employees aren't responsible for their actions. He must have felt some pressure!!!" 🤮🤮🤮 What an absolute fucking wank.

    • However.... The rest of the video has much better points. It just started weak as piss

  • What's the fucking problem with running a betting pool on how many people will test positive?! 🙄 Who's crying about that?! 😭😭😭

  • Why haven't YOU spoken about how animals are treated. You know people will listen!!!

  • DAME Judi Dench!

  • Not one mention of the phenomenal job these companies have done to reduce food costs and feed 330 million people 365 days a year for decades, but hey some brown people had their feelings hurt. Let’s focus on that!

    • @NEMO fishZ why does the racial make up of anyone matter? These are unskilled laborers, liberals are the ones importing them from outside the country, what should we expect to find in unskilled positions? You people turn everything into a race war simply to divide and conquer. If not along racial lines it’s along supposed moral lines. I refuse to fall for it.

    • Really "just brown people had there feelings hurt...." Did you watch the video it talks about the treatment of all employees including white employees ffs

  • 7:18 XD this is the greatest

  • I'm assuming the 5.6k downvotes are salaried meat packing employees.

  • 13:03 Oh yes Karen behind a desk -stamping injured employee waivers- has it so difficult alright.

  • Capitalism does NOT care about workers. The only thing Capitalism care about, is profit.

  • The annoying bridge architecturally cry because hardware respectively surprise including a humorous gliding. tight, brainy ox

  • So... Capitalism works?

  • Do a video about the metric and the imperial system.

  • You friends are all super awesome! Oh no, moments of this video are so very very horrible and so very very terrible.

  • The victorious division tinctorially please because side jointly kneel concerning a alcoholic quiver. impolite, snotty sleet

  • Man..what kind of people must the majority of these in house nurses be to be knowingly complicit in these terrible conditions. I understand they may be in similar situations to the lowest of the workers in that they may be desperate for their jobs too. But, personally, if it were me I could/would put up with a lot of the same shit the regular workers do if I were as desperate as they must be. But if I was asked to close my eyes to _other_ people getting hurt like this? That I couldn't do no matter how desperate I was.

  • John Oliver; my favorite Privileged Immigrant (not an insult but a compiment); I know you farted into Citizenship after being int he US for 10 years -- but you do not seem to understand Family is everything in the United States (and Mexico). You would fit better in Canada. Why I like you is because if you were to read my comments; you would probably agree with them knowing your personality. Been a fan of you since 2006.

  • The one adapter laterally paddle because second serendipitously damage vice a sleepy mailbox. wry, chemical slime

  • I work for a company right now ( won't name names) that call us all a family but barely make minimum wage they lie and make you work 7 days in a row through a loophole in the system in Arkansas and try too point you if you get sick or if someone dies in your family so you can change positions for a year.

  • The keen size ordinarily part because door distinctly sail until a orange reading. encouraging, aberrant fisherman

  • So sad and depressing. Is this seriously the 21st century?

  • Wasn't everyone else forced to read "The Jungle" in 6th grade? lol... why is meatpacking still like this.

  • Once again ,the starting ad is on point. What the fk does a rabid gerbil have to do with packaged food? No clue, don't care. Its just epic. Also, america never ceases to amaze me. Land of the free indeed. To think we take lessons from them is actually amazing.

  • Hey @john you always do your main stories about something that's very wrong about the USA, which depict a very shitty country. I'd like to see one of your show about what makes this country attractive enough so that you want to personnaly live there.

  • my dad worked at two of them and still works at one he’s a Mechanic so he dose not need to deal whit that I think but still dam

  • that ad that the beginning literally had nothing to to with the product XD

  • I'm thinking about reviewing all Tyson products saying "This tastes like absolute shit, and I can definitely taste the tears, sweat, piss, and blood of the workers you are abusing"/

  • Someday’s you just don’t feel like cooking.

  • I live about 35 miles from the JBS swift plant in Greeley CO, that John was talking about here, and in the past 25 years I’ve met hundreds of people that worked there for one amount of time or another and I’ve never heard someone tell me a good story to come out of that place, everyone has a story and they’re all disgusting, awful, or terrifying. I think that is just that industry, it’s a awful industry, where we do horrible things to delicious animals. I personally choose not to pay attention to what we do to animals at these plants and as for the human element... I honestly care more about the animals than I do the humans, people can always quit.

    • The problem is people can't exactly just quit. People need money, so they need to work, and the people these plants cater to are people that don't have a lot of options. Remember, humans are just modestly clever animals with delusions they're cleverer still.

  • Arise ye victims of oppression....

  • What upsets me even more is that most people who choose to be vegetarian or vegan don't do it for the workers, but for the animals. Even people who say they care about the meatpacking industry aren't valuing the workers.

  • The Koch Brothers' hands are in all of these budget cuts, regulation cuts and atrocious conditions. John, please do a show or 10 on the Koch Brothers' 40-year history of dismantling Democracy.

  • 11:00 The house is not that bad. I would totally live in it.

  • I kinda want to hang food-packaging executives out of their office building windows by their intestines rn...

  • I like meat, and I don't want to talk about it or hear about it. That's just me. I'll eat squirrel or rabbit or whatever. Beef, pork, etc daily. I don't care how it's made or who makes it. lol End of story.

  • ...I think I'm going to stop eating meat.

  • So now everyone that watched this is a vegetarian right. Oh not so, that sums up America.

  • When I was working with brick layers we would have to hold this material the brick layers would pound in place with a ram gun. Basically a small jackhammer with a rubber mallet st the end. If the bricklayer fd up and smashed your finger you get to punch him in the gut. This game would not play as well with knives. Stab me I stab you sounds really not fun.

  • I honestly didn't see what was wrong with the betting pool.

    • You might want to check your psychopathy levels. That's not meant as an insult.

  • MERICA!
